DESCRIPTION
I R I S (Instantly Responsive Intelligent System) is a kinetic panel which physically responds to solar gain and daylight. Using a Building Control Management computer system an optimal position of the panel is calculated. Its position maximises solar gain to the panels PV cells whilst simultaneously optimising solar gain to the interior of the building. The position of I R I S is controlled by electrical circuitry and positioning devices. This research document explains to the reader the environmental purpose of IRIS, the electronics and mechanics behind the panels movement and the mathematics behind its energy production and solar gain into a building. The document provokes further questions and research opportunities into responsive façades: an architectural topic which has huge environmental benefits for buildings of the future.
